Prior to this she served as Program Director at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the Geosciences and the Biosciences Directorates, Lita M Proctor This overview describes the impetus for and the goals of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)'s Human Microbiome Project (HMP) and the research resources available through the HMP. “Humans don't have all the enzymes we need to digest our own diet,” said Lita Proctor, Ph.D., NHGRI's HMP program manager. “Microbes in the gut break down many of the proteins, lipids and carbohydrates in our diet into nutrients that we can then absorb.
“With the more complex iHMP datasets now available, the potential for a similar burst of innovation exists.”

Dr. Proctor joined the Division of Genomic Sciences in the Extramural Research Program in 2010. From 2010 to 2018, Dr. Lita Proctor served as Coordinator of the NIH’s Human Microbiome Project, a ten-year $215M program to create a toolbox of widely disseminated reference datasets, computational and analytical tools and clinical protocols for this emerging field of biomedical research.
